With this unique form factor, the AIMMS-20 can be deployed as a modular plug-in component within a standard PMS canister receptacle (a standard format originated by Particle Measuring Systems). PMS canisters are routinely used internationally by atmospheric research aircraft, and this option allows an AIMMS system to be easily added to a research aircraft platform with canisters already in place.
The canister can house all AIMMS-20 components (GPS, IMU, ADP and CPM electronics) with either a CAN or RS232 digital interface. Optionally, GPS, IMU and CPM components can be operated as separate AIMMS modules inside the cabin leaving the canister unit free to function purely as an advanced ADP. With this arrangement, a further advanced option becomes available: the ability to pneumatically purge all 5-hole pressure lines on command. This option includes within the canister a 28VDC pump, pressure plenum with relief valve, pressure sensor feedback control circuit, and a electro-mechanical valve manifold to individually switch out ADP pressure sensors and direct purge air through the lines instead. Pneumatic purge is a useful feature if the aircraft expects to fly in conditions with very high ice/droplet concentrations that could eventually lead to water penetrating far inside the pressure lines.
Anti-ice heaters for the 5-hole probe tip are available to maintain proper function in icing conditions (note: by virtue of the aerodynamic design, flow circulation pathways for the reverse-flow T/RH sensor chamber remain ice free without heaters). Environmental heaters, controlled automatically based on internal temperature, are an optional feature suitable for operation at high-altitude where temperature can reach below -40C.
